Bellevue pitching stifles Skagit Valley to win 2007 title LONGVIEW, WASH- The Bellevue Bulldog's starting pitcher Mike Lee (So, Skyline HS) silenced the Skagit Valley bats to win the 2007 NWAACC All the scoring came from Bellevue who chipped away at the Skagit Valley pitchers. The first run of the game came on a Kyle Decater (Fr, Skyline HS) 350' solo homerun over the right field wall in the top of the third. In the fourth, BCC’s Kyle Montgomery (Fr, Kennedy HS) hit a lead off single to start. TJ Brown (So, Issaquah) hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Montgomery to second. Connor Rankin (Fr, Shorecrest) was walked and that was the end for starting pitcher Brent Botkin (Fr, Auburn). Unfortunately for Skagit Valley, new pitcher Colby Hawk (So, Timberline) was unable to defuse the Bellevue threat. Bellevue's Brian Gana (So, Richland) hit a double to score Montgomery from second. Bellevue's third run came in the eighth as Gana got his second RBI when hit a single off Hawk to score TJ Brown. Brad Reid entered in relief for Bellevue in the eighth inning and did not allow any hits and earned the save for his team. The Bellevue win gives Head Coach Mark Yoshino's first championship in his second try. Bellevue took second to Edmonds in 2002. This is Bellevue's third championship in 31 tournament appearances and first since 1979. LONGVIEW, WASH- The Columbia Basin Hawks looked as if they were going stay alive in the tournament with good pitching from Brett Boschler who managed to shutout the Cardinal offense for five innings. However, the Cardinals came out swinging in the bottom of the sixth with two doubles that started the flood. Boschler was pulled after giving up three runs in favor of Cameron Joslyn who gave up one more. Trent Henderson of Skagit Valley played a key role getting two RBI's in the fourth. That four-run inning was enough to hold off the defending NWAACC champs down the stretch. Columbia Basin's Jordan Esparza did his best to keep the Hawks in the game, hitting the game's only homerun and going three for five at-bat. However, CBC left nine runners on base missing out on key opportunities. The Cardinals' victory advances them to face the winner of tonight's match-up of Bellevue and Green River.
Bellevue gets it done WP- Buckham. LP- Hawk. The Bellevue Bulldogs got an excellent pitching performance from Brian Buckham who pitched seven and two-third innings allowing only two runs. Buckham struckout six and allowed two earn runs. The Cardinals had a few costly errors in the early innings. In the first inning, Bellevue scored two runs. With runners on first and third, Shane Hoey hit a RBI single to centerfield. The next batter, Mike Stone provided a sacrafice fly to score Wight from third. The third inning saw Bellevue score two more runs. After the lead off batter Justin Lucero was hit by a pitch, Hoey doubled to second past a diving Brad Tracy in centerfield. Stone followed Hoey with another RBI double to center right to score Hoey and give the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead. Skagit Valley scored their frst run in the fourth on a sacrafice fly by Ben Hardy. In the seventh, Eddie Sobczak came in as a pinch hitting and hit a RBI single for the Cardinals' second run. In the eighth, allowed a walkoff double by Kyle Boe and walked Zach Jacob after Brad Tracy advanced Boe to third. Bellevue Head Coach Mark Yoshino visited the mound and Buckham stayed in the game to strikeout Harty. However, Henderson hit a RBI single to make it 4-3. After the run, Blaine Hardy came into relieve Buckham and picked off Henderson at first to end the Skagit Valley threat. In the bottom, Hoey added another RBI to his total with a double straight up the middle. After a pitching change, Kyle Montgomery hit a bomb to the right field warning track just inside the foule line to score Hoey. Buckham recorded the victory and Hardy gets the save. The win guarantees Bellevue a spot on Championship Monday. They will face Green River Sunday at 7:05 p.m. Skagit Valley will play Columbia Basin at 2:05. The Gators never let up and LCC bats never came alive. The Gators were led by Blake Willard who was four for five at the plate. Colin Crouthamel drove in four runs for Green River. In an effort to slow down the Gator bats, LCC used five different pitchers. Hawks end Mt Hoods season in 14 Game 9 - Columbia Basin 4, Mt. Hood 3 - Longview, WA. WP - Esparza, LP - Bobnick LONGVIEW, WASH- The first game Saturday at day three of the NWAACC Championship turned out to be a classic game. In 14 innings, CBC outlasted Mt Hood 4-3 after 3 hours and 45 minutes. The game not only ends the Saints season, but also Interim Head Coach Dale Stebbins spectacular career. The game really got started in the sixth inning when Mt Hood opened the scoring with two-runs.
Columbia Basin answered in the top of the eighth with two runs. The game headed into the ninth and CBC had a runner in scoring position with two outs. The runner attempted to steal third and was thrown out. In the bottom of the ninth, the Saints had a chance with runners in second and third and the Hawks walked another runner to load the bases. The gamble paid off as CBC got a double play at home and first to force extra innings. Leaving runners on base and getting out jams was the order of the day. Columbia Basin left 18 batters stranded in the game while the Saints left nine. The Hawks scored in the top of the 11th on a sacrifice fly. The Saints answered immediately with a walkoff homerun by Tyson Nelson. Finally in the 14th, Bret Bochsler hit a single to drive in the winning run. The Saints did not have an answer in the bottom of the 14th. Jordan Esparza recorded the win after coming in relief for Columbia Basin in the ninth inning. The Lower Columbia Red Devils got on the board in the bottom of the second when Tyler McCallum grounded-out scoring Cal Vaccaro. The Bulldogs answered in the top of the third when Jason Moeby scored on an RBI single by Decater to make it an 8-1 lead. Brown stroked a double in the seventh, scoring Lyndon Estill, to add another run for the Devils to narrow the Bulldog lead to just five runs at 8-3. The Bulldog's Jesse Moon came into the game in relief of starter Brad Reid in the eighth and held the Devil batters in check to secure the win. WA. WP -
Verdugo, LP - Lange, Save - Visser Skagit's Ryan Verdugo made a great read in the second inning when he surprised a Saint base runner trying to steal second, catching the base runner in a pickle that resulted in a tag-out by second baseman Kyle Peace. Cardinal Brad Tracy scored on a Zack Jacob RBI single in the third to increase the Skagit Valley lead to 3-0. After holding the Saints to a single hit, Vedugo got into a bit of a jam in the bottom of the fifth when Mt. Hood got runners on second & third base, but he got out of the inning with a key strike-out, his eleventh of the game. Mt. Hood finally cracked Verdugo in the seventh, filling the bases in the seventh. After Verdugo walked in a run, Skagit Valley sent in J. J. McLeod who got the Cardinals out of the inning still holding a 3-1 lead. The Saints again threatened in the eighth when Justin Speer advanced to third, but McLeod was able to field a grounder to make the final out. Skagit's Derek Hefley capitalized on a Saint throwing error in the top of the ninth to score from third base to increase the Cardinal lead to 4-1. Skagit then loaded the bases, but Mt Hood's Nick Smith, pitching in relief, was able to hold on to keep Skagit from causing further damage. Skagit's shortstop Derek Hefley made two great plays in making all three put outs to retire the Saints in the ninth for a 4-1 Skagit Valley win. Cardinal closer Cody Vissor came on for the Cards in the ninth to earn the save. Skagit Valley (33-13) moves on the winner's bracket and will play the winner of the Lower Columbia - Bellevue contest Saturday at 7:05pm. Mt. Hood Community College Director of Athletics Fred Schnell has announced the hiring of Matt Dorey as the Saints new head baseball coach. Dorey replaces Dale Stebbins, long time MHCC Head Coach and NWAACC Hall-of-Fame member, who stepped in as interim Head Coach for this season when Gabe Sandy was hired by the Florida Marlins MLB organization. Sandy, who spent the past seven seasons at the Saints' helm, led the Saints to the NWAACC Championship in his first season, 2000, after taking over from Stebbins. "We are very fortunate to be able to hire a coach with the qualities Matt possesses," said Schnell. "He has experience as both a player and coach at the highest level of collegiate baseball, and his passion for the game of baseball and the development of the student-athlete is a winning combination." Dorey arrives at Mt. Hood following two successful years on the Washington State University staff. There his duties included handling first base coaching responsibilities, coaching outfielders, base running and assisting with the hitters in team and individual workouts. Dorey was also responsible for running all camps on the WSU campus. "When the opportunity to coach at Mt. Hood developed, I just couldn't pass it up," Dorey said. "While it is difficult to leave a tremendous program at WSU, one that I think is destined for great things in the very near future, I am thrilled to be returning home and facing the challenges of running my own program." In 2006 Dorey helped the Cougar hitters to a .310 average, the highest by a WSU squad since the 1991 season. His presence on the defensive side was also felt as WSU registered a .969 fielding percentage, fourth in the Pacific-10 Conference. He worked with All-Americans Jay Miller, Jared Prince and Travis Coulter as all three garnered national recognition for their play. Last summer Dorey served as manager of the Mat-Su Miners of the Alaskan Baseball League, guiding the Miners to a 20-15 mark and a third-place finish. "We are also fortunate in the fact Matt is returning to an environment he is very familiar with as he played at Mt. Hood for two years in 1993 and 1994 and also served two years as an assistant coach earlier this decade," Schnell said. "As a member of the 1993 NWAACC Championship team, he knows what it takes to be successful as a collegiate athlete, the demands on balancing athletics and academics, and that will serve him well as he guides the young men in the Saints program." Prior to WSU, Dorey spent two seasons at Mt. Hood where he served as assistant coach under Sandy. During his stay the Saints earned a second-place finish in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) in 2005 after a third-place finish in 2004. There he served as the infield and base running coach, coordinated the hitting school and off-season conditioning programs and was the recruiting coordinator in charge of Washington, Idaho and Eastern Oregon. In addition to his duties at Mt. Hood, Dorey also spent his summers as the head coach for the Mt. Hood Cardinals Baseball Club, working with a competitive roster filled with local college players. As a player Dorey played two years at Portland State, teaming with Sandy during the 1995 season, and with WSU Head Coach, Don Marbut in 1996. As a senior in 1996 he served as team captain, was named to the All-Pac-10 North team and earned team MVP honors. In that season he was statistically the second toughest player to strikeout in the country and did not strike out in Pac-10 North play.
