NWAC & Under Armour Baseball Athletes of the Week - Week 6
SOPHOMORE • PITCHER
Tyler Strickland, Great Falls HS, Great Falls, MT.
Despite facing a tough Spokane team at home, Strickland was able to pitch his way to a 2-0 win over the Sasquatch. He finished the day going 8 innings strong while scattering 9 hits for 0 earned runs. His great outing helps give the Chukars a much needed win in the perennially tough East Region.
"Tyler threw a fantastic game!" exclaimed Chukar head coach Steve Luby. "He was hitting his spots, changing speeds, and our defense behind him made some clutch plays. I’m so proud of Tyler and our team- they just compete everyday!"
NWAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK - MAY 1
Cody Russell, Curtis HS, University Place, WA.
Pierce’s speedy freshman shortstop connected on 12 of his 19 at bats for the week to finish with a .632 average. After reaching base, he swiped 14 bases in the 4-game series against Green River. Russell leads the NWAC now in stolen bases with 27 (caught stealing only 1 time). Lead by Russell’s speed and defense, Pierce has won 11 of their last 12 to move into a 3-way tie atop the West with Tacoma and Lower Columbia at 14-3.
"Cody had an outstanding weekend, said Raider head coach Kevin Davis. "He was relaxed at the plate and put good swings on the baseball. On the bases he was a terror, it seemed like he stole every bag. To top it off, defensively he made one of the best plays I've seen all year at shortstop. It was fun to watch him play this weekend!"
