Columbia Basin names Stefan McGovern as new head baseball coach
PASCO, WA - Former Menlo College and West Hills College head coach Stefan McGovern will take over as the new skipper of Hawks. McGovern most recently was the hitting coach for Cuesta College for 2 years.Prior to Cuesta, McGovern spent 4 years at West Hills College as the head coach. During his 4 years at West Hills, he turned a 3 win team into a 19 win team in the playoff hunt. At Menlo College, McGovern set the school record for wins (32) and came just shy of a 2012 NAIA World Series birth.
When asked about the transition from the national level to the NWAC, McGovern was optimistic. "I'm excited for the challenge to compete in the NWAC. Though I've spent most of my time coaching in California, I feel prepared for the daily grind it will take to allow our team to have success at this level. I know it is an extremely talented conference and division but I look forward to this opportunity."
His teams have always had do or die mentality and this upcoming season will be no different. "My expectation for this spring is that our team will play hard and compete every pitch. My goal is to make clear that our team wants it more than whichever team we are facing".
Athletic Director Scott Rogers was pleased with the hire stating that McGovern's experience will be a much needed trait for the new look Hawks. "He's been in a lot of different environments and we're excited to have his wealth of knowledge here with us at Columbia Basin."
Although he has yet to set foot in the NWAC, McGovern is not balking at the chance to make an impact with his new team. "I'm a very observant and aggressive coach who likes to take advantage of the opposing team's weaknesses. My goal is for our team to attack and take the game to other team. We will be very aggressive in the way we run bases, attack the strike zone and approach our bats."
McGovern made his way through a lengthy list of deserving candidates to become the new head coach and immediately accepted the position. " I was blown away by the Tri-cities area, the campus and staff during my tour of the facilities. The staff here at CBC really made my wife and I feel very comfortable and I look forward for the chance to work at this outstanding college."
CBC will kick off it's 2020 season with a month of home games beginning with a double header against Grays Harbor on February 29th. This will also be the first season on the new turf field which was recently installed over the summer.
