Mt Hood announces John Hawley as new head coach for Saint men and women's basketball
Mt. Hood Community College is pleased to announce that John Hawley has been appointed the new men’s and women’s basketball coach. Joining Hawley on the sidelines for Saints women's basketball as associate head coach will be former Saint, Shawnelle Campbell.
Coach John Hawley is beginning his first year as the Head Women’s and Men’s Basketball Coach at Mt. Hood Community College. He is a graduate of Eastern Oregon University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education and a Masters of Education Degree from the University of West Georgia. John was a basketball Prep All-American at Morrow High School in Atlanta, Georgia. He played college basketball at Berry College in Rome, Georgia and finished his college career at Eastern Oregon University.
Coach Hawley feels blessed and privileged to follow two outstanding coaches, Tyler Rose (former women’s coach) and Geoff Gibor (former men’s head coach) and to join an outstanding coaching staff and athletic program at Mt. Hood. He is looking forward to the challenge of guiding both the women’s and men’s basketball programs at MHCC. He is looking forward to developing player relationships and working with the athletes to help them grow outside their comfort zones athletically and academically while challenging them to prepare for the next level.
Coach Hawley has 30 plus years of boy’s head basketball coaching experience at the high school level in Oregon, Washington, and Georgia. Throughout those years, his teams have won several conference championships and experienced many state tournament runs with one State Championship. Coach Hawley has had the privilege to guide many players on to the next level and has coached against many former Division 1 players and professional players. During Coach Hawley’s career he has taken teams to Australia and Germany. During the summers he started and led basketball camps in Tus Jena, Germany for their club programs, and worked as a player development coach with their men’s and women’s professional basketball teams for a ten year period.
After retiring in 2003, he became part of the management team for Suwannee Sports Academy, a seven court 100,000 square foot basketball facility. During his seven years there, Coach Hawley worked with Kevin Cantwell, former associate head coach at Georgia Tech, to develop the On Court Player Development Training Program used by youth, high school, college, NBA and WNBA athletes. He also worked with Mark Price former NBA player and former NDBL shooting coach Bruce Kreutzer in the development of the Mark Price Shooting Lab. As the lead instructor in the On Court Player Development Program and event coordinator, Coach Hawley helped run and organize many leagues, camps, and college exposure events while at Suwanee Sports Academy.
Coach Hawley left Suwanee Academy to return to coaching as a head girls’ basketball high school coach for three seasons prior to returning to Oregon in the summer of 2013. He worked as a volunteer coach for the Men’s basketball team at Mt. Hood Community College during the 2013-2014 season. For the past year, he served as the athletic director at Centennial High School.
Coach Hawley is married to his wife, Rise’. They have two daughters, one son, two grandsons, and are awaiting the arrival of their third grandbaby.
