Lane women & Spokane men claim weekend basketball tournaments
BELLEVUE BULLDOG CLASSIC Bracket
BELLEVUE— In a field chalked full of talent, two familiar foes set themselves apart from all others in a championship game that may have provided a preview of the NWAC championships. Lane versus Umpqua is always a hard fought battle and this weekend was no different. Lane emerged victorious over the River Hawks by a final of 78-69.
The Titans were lead by Jordan Rodriguez who scored 20 and added 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Sarah Hall also provided 16/8/6. For Umpqua- Jordan Stotler netted 17 points and Dajanay Powell tallied a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Lane moves to 6-0 on the season while Umpqua drops to 5-1.
North Idaho bested host Bellevue to claim 3rd place by a score of 63-53. Lana Berg scored 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Brenda Akoto lead the Bulldogs with 17 points. Both teams will look to rebound after a rocky start to the season.
BIGFOOT CARDINAL CLASSIC Bracket
SPOKANE— The reigning NWAC champions continued to build on their strong start by reaching the championship game against an upstart Pierce team who gritted out 2 wins against North Idaho and Big Bend- both full of elite talent. However, Spokane showed that they are still the team to beat by outlasting Pierce 89-80.
Spokane was lead by tournament MVP Levi Taylor who scored 14 and had 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Cesar Sandoval also had 17 points. For Pierce, Makaleb McInnis had 23/8/6 in a losing effort. Spokane moves to 5-1 on the season while Pierce takes its first loss, dropping to 6-1.
Big Bend takes 3rd place after defeating Whatcom 91-87. Big Bend was lead by Jacob McCord who scored 29 and had 15 rebounds. Jai Jai Ely also had 19. For Whatcom, Leif Anderson lead the way with 24 points and Alex Martin had 17.
