MHCC Basketball Program Undergoes Coaching Change

The head coach of Mt. Hood Community College’s basketball teams will step down from coaching the women’s team to focus primarily on coaching the men’s.

Coach John Hawley will continue
leading the men's basketball team.

John Hawley is in his second year of coaching both men’s and women’s basketball teams at MHCC. He joined the college’s coaching staff after working for more than 30 years as a head basketball coach at high schools in Oregon and Georgia, and after helping manage the Suwanee Sports Academy in Georgia.

Current women’s team assistant coach, Jeremy Vandenboer, will replace Hawley as women’s head coach. Vandenboer joined the coaching staff in the fall of 2016. He brings with him 15 years of coaching experience, including with high school basketball programs in Washington and Montana and, most recently, as an assistant coach at Corban University in Salem. At Corban, Vanderboer helped lead the men’s team to a playoff berth in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Cascade Collegiate Conference during the 2015-2016 season. He has a Bachelor of Science in physical education and a Master of Art in Teaching in educational leadership from Walla Walla University.

According to Kim Hyatt, MHCC Athletic Director and Dean of Health and Physical Education, the change benefits the coaches, the program and the student-athletes.

“I am extremely grateful to Coach Hawley for all the work and effort he has put into both basketball programs,” said Hyatt. “He has done a phenomenal job and did exactly what we had planned with our women’s program he changed the culture and this is a stronger program, both academically and athletically, because of him. I am also excited for him having the opportunity to focus primarily on the men’s team I believe he will continue moving this program forward.

of the women's team.

We are very fortunate to have Coach Vandenboer accept this position too. I believe he will do an excellent job of leading the team toward our next goals. He has an outstanding knowledge of the game, he truly cares about all of our student-athletes and has done a great job of recruiting for next year.”
