Edmonds promotes Eric Ensign to Women's Basketball Head Coach
Eric Ensign has been hired as the women’s basketball coach at Edmonds Community College as announced on Tuesday, March 21. Ensign assisted retiring women's head coach Ron Newton for two years and has also served as an assistant on the Edmonds CC men’s basketball team.
"I am really excited to take over the program,” said Ensign. “It will definitely be a challenge, but one I'm looking forward to. We have some great players coming in next year that will help us rebuild. I anticipate we will be competitive right away."
Ensign has been coaching basketball in the Seattle area for nearly twenty-five years. Besides his work at Edmonds CC, Ensign has served as a Ballard High School boys' assistant, head girl’s coach at Juanita High School, assistant men’s coach at North Seattle Community College, and head boys' coach at Mariner High School and Nathan Hale High School.
During his tenure at Nathan Hale, Ensign helped build a successful program showing major improvements each year. For the 2011-2012 season, Nathan Hale made it to the Sea-King district playoffs, nearly earning a trip to the state tournament. Ensign was named Metro Coach of the Year that season. As an assistant in 2014, Ensign helped guide the Edmonds CC men's basketball team to a fifth place finish at the NWAC tournament.
“I want to thank Coach Ron Newton for all that he did for the women’s basketball program,” said outgoing Athletic Director Jorge de la Torre. “Ron stepped in at a really tough time and kept the program going. I’m glad he will return to being an assistant with the men’s team. I am also thrilled that Coach Ensign and assistant coach Eddie McFerrin are remaining onboard with the women’s team. I anticipate some really fun times ahead.”
