Clackamas Men repeat as NWAACC Champions
Kennewick, WA -- In a slow start, The Clackamas Cougars scored the game's opening bucket nearly four minutes into the contest then went on to stun the Lower Columbia Red Devils cruising to a 23 point win, 72-49.
Coming into the game, the two squads met in preseason tournament championship games with the Devils coming out victorious on both occasions. The contest also marked a repeat of last season's championship game where the Cougars just edged the Devils a in an overtime thriller.
Both teams struggled with their shooting but Clackamas' 45% was 15% better than the Devils' 30%. The Cougars also dominated the paint, out rebounding the Devils 50-31.
Southern Region and NWAACC Tournament MVP Chehales Tapscott was blistering hot scoring 26 points to go with his 21 rebounds, 3 blocks and two steals. Tapscott was also the Tournament MVP last season. Jeff Dorman followed Tapscott's act with 15 points and 7 boards. Andre Dickson was the Cougars' top pickpocket with a game high four steals.
West Region MVP Marcus Bell led the Devils with 16 points, 15 boards and three blocks. Jeray Key and Clint Burgoyne combined on another 24 points.
The championship marks the third time in four years that coach Clif Wegner and Clackamas has walked away with the title. They end their season with an overall record of 25-5.
Lower Columbia end their 2009-10 campaign with a 25-4 record and their second consecutive 2nd place finish. They also recently had back-to-back title runs in 2004 and 2005.
