Von Vogt named new head coach of Peninsula men's basketball

PORT ANGELES Ė Lance Von Vogt, of Arizona Western College, was named menís basketball head coach at Peninsula College today, taking over the position recently vacated by eight-year coach Peter Stewart, who accepted the head coaching job at Minot State.

"We have enjoyed a very successful tradition in men's basketball and weí're looking forward to coach Von Vogt continuing that tradition," Director of Athletics Rick Ross said. "Coach Von Vogt has the experience and the passion to step right in and do the job. He also seems like a great fit for the college and for this community."

As the top assistant coach at Arizona Western, Von Vogt's chief responsibility was recruiting. Before arriving at AWC in 2006, he was the Manager of Basketball Operations at Eastern Kentucky University where the Division I Colonels placed fourth in the highly-respected Ohio Valley Conference. Prior to that, he was the head coach at Oxford College of Emory University, where he led the Eagles to a pair of playoff appearances. His head coaching stint was only three years, but the two playoff appearances were the first in the programís history. In his third year there, OC recorded a school-record 22 wins, regional and inter-regional championships and a spot in the NJCAA Top 10, earning Von Vogt the 2004-05 Region Coach of the Year honors.

Von Vogt's first coaching experience came under the legendary Lefty Driesell. Von Vogt was the Director of Basketball Operations at Georgia State under Driesell from 2000 through 2002. During that time, the Panthers earned a trip to the 2001 NCAA Tournament and advanced to the second round with a win over Wisconsin. Georgia State followed suit with its first-ever trip to the NIT in 2002. Von Vogt also worked as a graduate assistant for Georgia Tech for two seasons.

He earned a Masterís Degree in Sports Administration from Georgia State and a Bachelor's Degree in Mass Comunications from the University of South Florida in 1998. He played college basketball at St. Johnís River Community College in Palatka, Florida where he finished his career with a 51% 3-point field goal percentage. Von Vogt and his wife, AWC Director of Resident Life & Student Activities Char Von Vogt, recently celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary. They have two children.

In addition to his coaching duties, Von Vogt will serve as the Athletic Development Coordinator for Peninsula College where his primary duty will be to raise funds for athletic scholarships.
