Long Beach State signs Everett's Mary Ochiltree
LONG BEACH, CA -- Long Beach State women's basketball head coach Jody Wynn announced the addition of Lauren Spargo (Valencia, Calif.) and Mary Ochiltree (Lake Stevens, Wash.) for the 2011-12 season.
"We are very pleased to have these outstanding young ladies join our Beach family," Wynn said. "Both young women are extremely competitive people with a great work ethic and they will fit in terrifically with our team atmosphere. We are thrilled to add these two quality student-athletes who will be tremendous assets to our team and our University."
Lauren Spargo, a 5-foot-11 guard, lettered four years at Valencia High School in Santa Clarita. She helped lead the Lady Vikings to the CIF Division IA playoffs each year, including a quarterfinal appearance in 2009.
As a senior, Spargo averaged 14.7 points and 6.8 rebounds on a squad that finished with a 21-8 overall record. She garnered first-team All-Foothill League and first-team All-Santa Clarita Valley honors. Spargo was also named the most valuable player of the Burroughs Tournament where she averaged 15 points per game.
"Lauren Spargo is a versatile, athletic guard who absolutely loves the game," said Wynn. "We were able to watch her play this past season and were very impressed with her versatility, and we see a great deal of potential. She is very competitive and has the passion to succeed. Lauren will have a great future here at The Beach."
Mary Ochiltree is a junior transfer from Everett Community College in Everett, Wash. As a sophomore, the 5-foot-11 guard was a first-team All-NWAACC Northern Region selection. She led the Trojans to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Tournament, averaging 15.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest. Ochiltree reached double figures 22 times with five 20-plus scoring games, including a career-high 29 points against North Seattle Community College. At Lake Stevens High School, Ochiltree was a two-time first-team all-conference selection and was tabbed the 2008 WESCO Player of the Year. She led her squad to three state tournament appearances, two conference titles and one district championship. She left Lake Stevens as the school-record holder in career 3-point field goals made (167) and 3-point field goals made in a season (51).
"Mary Ochiltree is highly competitive and will add versatility to our team," Wynn said. "She possesses great shooting range and will be a constant outside threat to opponents. Her length defensively, ability to rebound the ball and outside shooting will allow her to make an immediate impact to our program."
Spargo and Ochiltree join Bianka Balthazar and Devin Hudson as members of Long Beach State's 2011-12 recruiting class.
