Chemeketa Storm standout Weiss signs basketball scholarship for University of Idaho
Salem, OR -- Janelle Weiss has become the latest Chemeketa Community College student athlete to move on to the Division I level
Weiss, a West Salem High School graduate, has accepted a full athletic scholarship to play women’s basketball for the University of Idaho Vandals.
“Janelle has a very talented skill set,” Chemeketa head women’s basketball coach Jesse Ailstock said. “She can handle the ball extremely well, shoot the three and attack the basket. The University of Idaho is getting a kid who loves to compete and is a proven winner.”
Weiss, a 5’5” guard, came to the Storm after an all-Central Valley Conference senior season at West Salem. Her impact with the Storm was immediate, as she was named to the NWAACC Southern Region’s All-Freshman team during the 2010-11 season.
Janelle’s sophomore season was even better, as she average 17.5 points, 4.1 assists and 3.5 rebounds in regional play, numbers that resulted in her being named the NWAACC Southern Region Player of the Year.
Weiss was a lynchpin player in a successful 2011-12 season for the Storm. Chemeketa went 21-8 on the season and finished fourth at the NWAACC Championship tournament in Kennewick, Wash.
“I’m excited to see Janelle play at the Division I level, as I know it has been a lifelong dream of hers that will become a reality,” Ailstock said.
