Bobbi Britt, the leading scorer and rebounder on Grays Harbor College’s women’s team, is literally headed south to continue her college basketball career.

Britt signed a letter of intent this week with Alcorn State University in Mississippi.

Halcyon Swisher, Britt’s friend and basketball teammate, will also attend Alcorn State as a future member of the school’s women’s golf team. Swisher was the lone female member of GHC’s golf team this past spring.

The 20-year-old Britt will receive a full-ride basketball scholarship at Alcorn State. A freshman from Anchorage, Alaska, the 5-8 wing averaged 16 points per game and led the NWAACC Western Division in rebounding with a 10.2 per game average. She registered double-doubles in scoring and rebounding in 10 games last season.

“She’s a great athlete,” said Choker coach Christine Nelson. “She runs well, she jumps well. She’s going in as a sophomore, so she has room to grow. She has room to grow as a player and I think that’s one of the things they liked about her.”

Tonya Edwards, a former standout player under legendary coach Pat Summitt at the University of Tennessee and a 10-year veteran of the Women’s National Basketball Association, is in her fifth year as Alcorn State’s coach. The Lady Braves had a 2-25 record last season but played a rugged non-conference schedule that included match-ups with national powers Tennessee and Kentucky.

“They have a professional coach and I should be able to continue to grow a lot and experience some neat things as a player and a student,” Britt said Tuesday.

The school’s rural location also appealed to Britt.

“I’m ready to experience some new things,” she said.

Britt said she’ll need to develop her outside shot at Alcorn State, but noted she had already made some progress on her perimeter game at GHC.

“In high school, I was pretty much off-balance driving to the basket,” she said. “(Coach) Nelson helped me set my feet more and she really helped me with my jump shot.”

Britt said she plans to continue as a criminal justice major with the intent of eventually pursuing a career in juvenile investigation.

Although Britt had a year of eligibility remaining at GHC, Nelson said she was aware her leading scorer would be leaving for a four-year school. Britt had transferred to Grays Harbor after red-shirting during the 2011-12 campaign at Clark College.

“I knew she was going to be here for only a year,” said the Choker coach. “She told me so.”

Britt had also been recruited by several NCAA Division II and NAIA schools, Nelson said.

Swisher will be guaranteed at least a 50 percent scholarship at Alcorn State. Interestingly, since the school’s student body is primarily African-American, Swisher (who is Caucasian) will receive a minority scholarship.

She placed 11th in the NWAACC golf tournament last spring.

The 20-year-old Swisher, who also hails from Anchorage, is seeking to improve her game to the point where she could either play or teach professionally.

“I’m looking to take this past the college level,” she said. “I really do enjoy golf.”

Although a part-time basketball starter for Grays Harbor, Swisher will largely abandon that sport at Alcorn State. She left open the possibility of scrimmaging with the basketball squad.

“It’s going to be (strange) watching Bobbi playing, but I’m sure we’ll get together for 1-on-1 or some intramurals,” she said.
