Umpqua's Dave Stricklin notches win #700
WINCHESTER — The Umpqua Community College women’s basketball team defeated Portland 78-63 on Saturday afternoon in its Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Southern Region opener and gave Dave Stricklin his 700th career coaching win.
Stricklin has won 441 games in 19 years at UCC. His other 259 wins came in eight seasons at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Calif.
“It (700th) means I’ve been doing it a long time,” he said. “I’ve been extremely fortunate to have been surrounded by really good people, my dad (Richard) being No. 1. I wouldn’t have a career if it wasn’t for him.
“It’s definitely been a family thing, that’s the cool part. Every one of my 700 wins I’ve had somebody in the family sitting next to me (on the bench). And you can’t do it without really good players.”
“It’s awesome,” Smith, the NWAACC Women’s Player of the Week, said. “We wanted to get it for him last Sunday (against North Idaho) and it feels really good to get him there. He’s a great coach and definitely deserves it.”
