NWAACC Golf heats up as '08-09 season winds down
2009-04-29 08:47:49

Mike NoreenVancouver, WA - As the teams prepare for the fourth and final regular season match this weekend, both the men’s and women’s regular season championships will be on the line.

Southwestern Oregon, Spokane and Walla Walla are all tied with 26 points on the men’s side, while the Spokane women lead Green River by one heading into the 36 hole final at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn.

Soutwestern Oregon has benefitted from Andrew VonLossow and Nick Fasiano shooting the lowest scores on the board in the past two tournaments, while Spokane will ride the momentum of its one shot team victory at the Apple Tree Tournament and its non league victory last weekend in the Bigfoot Invitational.  Walla Walla has been steady all year long with Mike Noreen putting up the lowest numbers on the season.

In a two team race for the women, Chelsea Kenner from Spokane has won two sudden death playoffs in league matches to put Spokane in position to win the title.  However, expect Green River’s Jenna Rochelle and Annie Viola to put up a battle on their home course.

Following the event, the teams will have two weeks to prepare for the NWAACC Championship tournament hosted by Walla Walla on May 17-18.

Seattle, Wash. - The Seattle University athletic department has announced the hiring of Don Rasmussen as the school’s head golf coach, a significant step in the process of reestablishing the golf program at the university.

Rasmussen has been the head golf coach at Tacoma Community College since March 2005, responsible for all aspects of both the men’s and women’s golf programs. In 2005, the women’s golf team won the NWAACC championship.

"We welcome Don to the Seattle U. family. He has substantial coaching experience and contacts in the Northwest and has demonstrated an ability to build a strong program from the beginning," Athletic Director Bill Hogan said.
