Gary Earnest came to LCC in 1972 and has made a positive impact on both the school's and conference's athletic programs. He was head men's basketball coach from 1972-80 and 1988-91.

During that time, his teams compiled a 204-89 record with three division titles and finished runner-up at the 1974 and 1991 NWAACC Tournaments.

Earnest became athletic director in 1978 and earned the Dutch Triebwasser Award in 1992. During his tenure as AD, Lower Columbia hosted all-star events in basketball, baseball and volleyball as well as hosting NWAACC conference championships in baseball, basketball and cross country.
