Walla Walla Community College
Class of 2009

Coach Gary Knecht worked at Walla Walla Community College from 1967-1985, during which time he served as a Physical Education and Recreation Instructor, the Athletic Director, and the Head Football Coach. He was the Head Football Coach from 1976-1983, and during this eight year tenure his teams compiled a 53-2-19 overall record. Coach Knecht's teams won two NWAACC titles in 1979 and 1981 respectively, with his team's 1979 championship being the first Football Championship in school history. His approach to the overall development of our student-athletes was respected by school staff and faculty alike. Coach Knecht is credited with bringing a complete program to Walla Walla Community College with an emphasis on program development and an extensive approach to recruiting. It was his approach to coaching and recruiting that truly set the standard for the direction of the football program for years to come. Upon stepping out of coaching for a couple of years in 1983, Coach Knecht served as Walla Walla Community College's first Foundation Director. Eventually, he moved on to assistant coaching stints at Oregon State University and at Azusa Pacific University where he still helps with the program.
