Dr. Jim Walton received his B.S. and M.S. in Natural Resources Management from the School of Natural Resources at the University of Michigan and his PhD. in Fisheries from the College of Fisheries at the University of Washington.

After working three years for the Department of Fisheries in Olympia he began his teaching career in 1980 as the Director of Fisheries Technology at Peninsula College. A highlight of his fisheries career included a gubernatorial appointment for 10 years on the Fish and Wildlife Commission.

In 1993 he entered the administrative ranks in Professional Technical education, serving as Associate Dean, Dean and Vice President of Workforce Education. In 2002, Dr. Walton became President of Centralia College.

In 2003 he received the Greater Northwest Region Distinguished College President award by Phi Theta Kappa; in 2007, the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations Pacesetter of the Year award; in 2012, the Phi Theta Kappa Shirley B Gordon Award of Distinction; in 2013 the Chronicle and Lewis County Economic Development Council’s Russ Mohney Recreation Resource Stewardship Award, the Trustees Association of Community and Technical College’s 2013 Award for Leadership and the Centralia College Athletic Programs Sports Hall of Fame Roll of Honor Award.

Dr. Walton also served on the NWAC Executive Board from 2004-07. Jim was the major force behind getting the Washington athletic grant-in-aid changed from a flat amount to an amount that increases with tuition and includes a waiver. This was a major change and accomplishment for the NWAC and Washington Community Colleges.

Jim Walton excelled as a teacher and as an administrator. He is someone who is well known for his commitment to the student-athlete, integrity and wisdom, which has impacted many people. Dr. Walton has had a significant influence on the evolvement of the NWAC.
