Hawkins graduated from St. Augustine High School in New Orleans before being recruited to Spokane Falls CC by head coach John Buck and volunteer assistant coach Craig Parks.

He had an almost unbelievable football career at Spokane, being selected for the All-NWAACC All-Star team as a running back in both 1988 and 1989. Hawkins led the NWAACC in scoring both years with 12 touchdowns in 1988 and 13 in 1989.

He was also named as the Team Co-MVP and the NWAACC Offensive Player of the Year in 1988.

Hawkins was recruited by the University of Nebraska and was the starting slot back as they won the Big Eight title and played in the Orange Bowl both years.

He served as a high school teacher/coach, and has been an ordained minister for the past 20 years.
