TUKWILA, WA -- It took 103 minutes for either team to find the back of the net, but in the 3rd minute of the second sudden death overtime Peninsula sophomore striker Bri Vallente nailed the game winner to give Peninsula its third NWAC Women's Soccer Championship.

Vallente took a cross from the endline off a touch by freshman wing Maddy Parton and slipped it passed West Region All-Star goalie Rachel Thompson to the delight of a large Pirate crowd on hand.

It was no surprise that the match was a defensive battle as both teams sported the stingiest defenses in the league.

Peninsula came in to the match with 17 shutouts and allowed only six goals all season - two of which went to Highline in a preseason match on August 28.

Highline was sporting 13 consecutive shutouts and had only allowed 9 goals prior to tonight's match.

Thompson had 5 saves in the match while Peninsula freshman keeper Akari Hoshino blocked four shots. Peninsula out-shot the Thunderbirds 12-5.

Vallente, who had three goals in the last two matches, was named the Most Valuable Player while teammate Kennady Whitehead was appointed Most Inspirational Player.

Pirate head coach Kanyon Anderson was named the NWAC Coach of the Year.
