Whatcom alum Jessica Petersen takes reins of Orca Volleyball

Jessica Petersen has been named the Head Volleyball Coach at Whatcom Community College.

Jessica has over 15 years of experience in volleyball as both a coach and a player and is excited to build upon the program’s impressive foundation laid by former head coach Angie Short.

Most recently, Jessica spent 2 years coaching JV Volleyball at Bellingham High school. Prior to that, she was the assistant varsity volleyball coach at Ferndale High school for 1 year.

Jessica earned her Associates Degree from WCC in 2010 and played for the Orcas from 2006-2008. During that span, the team won multiple NWAC North Region Championships and earned a second place finish overall in the NWAC Tournament.

She was nominated to the NWAC 1st Team, finished runner-up NWAC Player of the year, won offensive player of the week (Week 1 and 8), and was the 2008 NWAC Blocking Record Holder. During her Orca Career she had 251 kills with 97 blocks.

Jessica most recently played two years of pro volleyball for Puget Sound Premier. In 2016, Jessica’s beach volleyball team took first place in the Women’s Open Quads Division at the Seaside Open. In the final match, Jessica had a record 23 kills. She is currently playing adult club volleyball and competing in the Open division volleyball circuit in the Pacific Northwest.

She is a 2006 graduate of Enumclaw High School, where she lettered 1 year in track and three years in Volleyball. There, she was an All-League nominee and helped take the Hornets to State her senior year. Jessica is also a Business Loan Servicer and Processor for Whatcom Educational Credit Union.

It should be noted that Jessica had the honor of being coached by Angie Short while playing for Whatcom. In that one year, she learned immensely from Coach Short; skills she will call upon as she strives to fill the huge hole left by Angie.
