Whatcom removes the 'interim' tag from Men's Basketball Head Coach Tom Rawlings

Tom Rawlings has been named Whatcom Community College’s new men’s basketball coach. Rawlings led the WCC  team to the Elite 8 of the NWAC Tournament this year as interim head coach.

Rawlings has coached in the Western Washington area for the past 25 years both at the high school and college levels.

At the high school level, this included stints at Sedro Woolley High School, Burlington Edison High School and Bellingham High School. During this time, Tom’s teams combined for 11 state tournament appearances. In addition, Rawlings spent six seasons as an assistant coach for the Orcas and head coach Chris Scrimsher from 2006-2012.

During this era, Whatcom made 5 NWAC playoff appearances and 1 North Region championship in 2012. The Orcas finished that season 15-1 in league play and 23-5 overall.

In Rawlings’ 2016-2017 interim season as head coach, the Orcas finished 8-6 in the NWAC North Region and 18-10 overall, good enough to earn the school’s second consecutive bid to the NWAC Tournament. In the first round of the tournament, WCC pulled out an 84-78 win in overtime over the Clark Penguins . Ultimately, the Orcas fell to eventual champion Walla Walla in the Elite 8.

Rawlings is also a teacher at Sedro Woolley High School in Sedro Woolley, WA and graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree from Western Washington University.
