Grays Harbor WBB Community Outreach

The Daily World - source article

The Grays Harbor College women’s basketball team has helped donate numerous items to the Union Gospel Mission in Aberdeen as part of an ongoing outreach effort.

Choker coach Derrick Pringle estimates that the team has donated some 20-to-30 boxes of food, clothing, blankets, furniture and children’s apparel to the mission this season.

“The girls really stepped up to the challenge,” Pringle said. “The project has allowed them to get into the community and give back and bring a smile to those in need. We had the opportunity to visit the center and see what great work they do. It was a life-changing experience.”

The team’s involvement with the Union Gospel Mission and other community organizations grew out of the team’s “Helping Hands Project” created last fall. The project, intended to help area families prepare for the Christmas holiday season, was originally planned as far more short-lived.

“We knew this past year was hard on a lot of families who may have lost employment,” Pringle noted. “So I asked the girls to go to their families and communities to do a food, blanket and clothing drive for a week.”

An Olympia-based AAU group, Team 3:16, assisted with the effort.

The success of the drive inspired the Chokers to continue the program beyond its scheduled expiration date. The team even participated in the Union Gospel Mission’s Christmas gift exchange.

“With the collaboration of both groups, the one-week project has turned into an ongoing event,” Pringle noted.

The Chokers have also served as volunteer coaches and officials as several elementary schools in Grays Harbor and Thurston counties and assisted with the YMCA of Grays Harbor’s youth basketball league.
