Olympic Fourth - SW Oregon Third - It's Mt Hood vs Walla Walla for 2009 Softball Championship

Portland, Ore - South and East Region fourth seeds Mt Hood Saints and Walla Walla Warriors survived intense defensive competition Sunday to advance to the championship game Monday.

The day kicked off with opening matches of Olympic Rangers vs. SW Oregon Lakers and Walla Walla vs. Mt Hood.

The Lakers eliminated the Rangers 4-1 on a 11K, 5-hit performance by freshman pitcher Chelsea Talbert. SW Oregon jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a rare run given up by Erika Quint, who entered the game with four straight shut-outs in the tournament.

The Lakers then punched in another three runs when freshman Meg Harasymczuk smashed a three run homer to score sophomore All-American Emily Matekel and freshman Devin Higgins.

The Rangers ended the tournament with a fourth place finish and hardware to put into Olympic trophy case.

In the other 10am match, Mt Hood again had to rely on the pitching prowess of NWAACC All-American Lauren Hadenfeld as she mowed down twelve Warrior batters on strikeouts in a 4-2 Saint win over Walla Walla to send the Warriors into the one-loss bracket.

Walla Walla held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but Mt Hood sophomore All-American Ashley Lokey drove in Bre Thomas to knot it at 2 apiece.

With two outs and a full count, Saint freshman Nicole Colpron got her biggest hit of the tournament when she launched a rocket to score Lokey on a 2-run walk off home run for a 4-2 win that propelled the Saints into Monday's championship game.

In the 12:15pm game, Walla Walla took on SW Oregon for as berth in the championship match.

The game was dominated by great pitching as freshman All-American Annaleisha Parsley held the Warriors to just four hits and Walla Walla sophomore All-American Makenzie Marchbanks kept the Lakers to just five hits.

Parsley got the Lakers on the board with a solo home run in the fourth, but freshman Lyndsey Minnich answered with a shot of her own in the bottom of the inning to tie it at 1-all after four.

Neither squad could generate another run after seven to send the game into extra innings.

Walla Walla ended the drama in the bottom of the eighth when freshman Shaila Rivers drove in freshman All-American Natalie Leyland who was pinch running for sophomore Tressa Robins to send the Warriors into the final.

Despite disappointment, SW Oregon can celebrate a great season with an overall third place finish in the 26-team league.

Mt Hood and Walla Walla will meet for the title on Monday at 11am. A win by the Saints will give them the championship. Since the tournament is double elimination, a Warriors win in the 11am game would force a second game at 1:15pm to determine the champion.
