CHALLENGES
Below are the weekly mascot challenges that are scheduled for the 2018 Mascot Challenge. Please follow all guidelines stated. Ideas are listed for each challenge to help you brainstorm creative ways to complete each task. Yes, you are more than welcome to complete a challenge early, but you may not post it until the challenge week officially begins for that challenge. Posting early will result in disqualification. The NWAC will also publish weekly updates each Monday showing total votes from the previous week.

Voting Procedure

Voting will begin each Monday and end each Friday at 12:00pm noon.

The NWAC office will tally up total followers across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, as well as total up total likes (“votes”) of the post on each channel. Then, the total “votes” will be taken as a percentage of the total followers. This really tests the engagement of your audience.

Week 1 Preliminaries

New Year, New YouJanuary 16th – January 19th

What: Post one photo per school. Memes may be included on the photo, and are encouraged to boost creativity.

When: No earlier than January 16, 2018 (For the extreme, yes it can be posted at 12:00am on this date.)

Where: Post your photo to the social media accounts that you submitted on the Mascot Challenge registration.

How: Use the hash tag #NWACmascotchallenge2018

Why: Showcase something new on campus – it could be a new mascot, new building, new person (faculty, coach, AD, etc.), new academic program, you name it! Make sure to get your mascot in the photo, but be creative!

Week 2 Preliminaries

Local Landmark PrideJanuary 22nd – January 26th

What: Post one photo per school. Memes may be included on the photo, and are encouraged to boost creativity.

When: No earlier than January 22, 2018

Where: Post one image per school. The image can be a split-photo image or a collage into one image. Memes may be included on the image, and are encouraged to boost creativity.

How: Use the hash tag #NWACmascotchallenge2018

Why: To embrace the parts of the Pacific Northwest that make your school community unique. Find a landmark, natural or man-made, could be a local business that your area is known for, and get your Mascot in the shot. Think along the lines of snapping a few photos of your mascot with Mt. Rainier in the background, enjoying a long walk on the beach of the Pacific Ocean or Columbia River, or even enjoying the location of some famous businesses like the Nike Campus or Boeing Factory.

After week 2 vote totals – the top 8 announced will advance to
week 3.

Week 3 Elite Eight

All About AthleticsJanuary 29th – February 2nd

What: Post one photo OR one video (30 seconds max.) per school. Memes may be included on the photo, and are encouraged to boost creativity. Be selective on music choice to avoid copyright issues. Some video production applications/programs provide music for you so that could help.

When: No earlier than January 29, 2018 (For the extreme, yes it can be posted at 12:00am on this date.)

Where: Post your photo/video to the social media accounts that you submitted on the Mascot Challenge registration.

How: Use the hash tag #NWACmascotchallenge2018

Why: Highlight something unique about your athletics program. This could be on a student-athlete, a team, a coach, a field, athletic director, etc. What is it about the athletics program that stands out to you and makes it special? Don’t forget to keep the Mascot involved in the photo/video!

After week 3 vote totals – the top 4 announced will advance to
week 4 Final Four..

Week 4 Final Four

Community MattersFebruary 5th – February 9th

What: Post one photo OR one video (30 seconds max.) per school. Memes may be included on the photo, and are encouraged to boost creativity. Be selective on music choice to avoid copyright issues. Some video production applications/programs provide music for you so that could help.

When: No earlier than February 5, 2018 (For the extreme, yes it can be posted at 12:00am on this date.)
Where: Post your photo/video to the social media accounts that you submitted on the Mascot Challenge registration.

How: Use the hash tag #NWACmascotchallenge2018

Why: The NWAC and many collegiate schools are always trying to find ways to give back to the communities that give so much in order to help keep our programs running. This week’s challenge is all about getting involved and making connections within your community. Have your mascot represent your school by volunteering with a local nonprofit organization: help serve food at a local homeless shelter, pick up garbage along the roadway, or hold a clothing drive are a few basic ideas. Perhaps your school regularly assists a specific organization, you could highlight this.

Week 5 Final Round

Me, the Mascot” February 12th – February 16th

What: Post one video (60 seconds max.) per school. Be selective on music choice to avoid copyright issues. Some video production applications/programs provide music for you so that could help.

When: No earlier than February 12, 2018 (For the extreme, yes it can be posted at 12:00am on
this date.)

Where: Post your video to the social media accounts that you submitted on the Mascot Challenge registration.

How: Use the hash tag #NWACmascotchallenge2018

Why: This week’s challenge is all about the mascot itself. How the mascot came to life, what the mascot is all about, what a typical day looks like, where its name came from, how they prepare, what motivates them. Think about what the mascot means to the college and community and how they will impact the athletic culture on campus.
