Tacoma Volleyball hires former Central Washington All American Rachael Schurman
Tacoma Community College has hired Rachael Schurman as the new Head volleyball coach. Schurman a former All American player and assistant coach from Central Washington University comes highly recommended from many in the volleyball community, most notably from CWU Head coach Mario Andaya “"As a player Rachael knew how to win, and brought many intangibles to the court that made her teammates better. After her stellar playing career she has successfully transferred those elements to the coaching side and has become one of the brightest, upcoming coaches in the area. Rachael can identify talent, and can develop that talent to play at a high level. Tacoma has had a strong tradition, and I am excited to see where Rachael can take them."
Schurman who graduated in 2010 with a B.A in elementary education and a minor in early childhood education served as an assistant coach for CWU for the 2009 and 2010 seasons where she excelled as a recruiter as well as her on the floor coaching. Schurman played at CWU from 2005-08 where she was a American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All American and 2 time All West Region and All Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) performer. She led the Wildcats in nearly every statistical category in both her junior & senior seasons while leading the Wildcats to 3rd place GNAC finishes. Prior to attending CWU she was a High School All American at Mead High School in Spokane. Schurman is also involved in club coaching as she is a coach with the Puyallup Jr’s Volleyball Club.
“We are so excited to get a great young coach the caliber of Rachael, Her career as a player and as an assistant coach at Central speak volumes to her knowledge and passion for Volleyball. Every person I spoke to about Rachael told me we would be lucky to have her lead our program. In addition, her degree in Education is a perfect fit for the advising job she will have on campus. We look forward to Rachael leading the Titans to great success” said Tacoma Community College Athletic Director Carl Howell.
“I am so thankful for the opportunity the Tacoma Community College Athletic and Advising Departments have given me. I would like to thank President Dr. Pamela Transue, Vice President Mary Chikwinya and Athletic Director Carl Howell for considering me for the position. I would also like to thank Mario Andaya (Central Washington University Head Volleyball Coach) for being my mentor over the past 7 years and providing me with the experience and knowledge to coach at the collegiate level. I can't wait to start working with the players, students and staff of TCC. I look forward to getting in the gym with the team and starting our season”. Said Schurman.
