Bellevue pitching stifles Skagit Valley to win 2007 Baseball title
2007-05-28 18:36:43
LONGVIEW, WASH- The Bellevue Bulldog's starting pitcher Mike Lee (So, Skyline HS) silenced the Skagit Valley bats to win the 2007 NWAACC Championship 3-0 over the Cardnals. Lee pitched seven innings and allowed only four hits, struck out six and allowed zero runs. The Cardinals had scored 12 runs in their victory over Green River earlier in the day to earn the opportunity to meet Bellevue for the 2007 NWAACC Championship. All the scoring came from Bellevue who chipped away at the Skagit Valley pitchers. The first run of the game came on a Kyle Decater (Fr, Skyline HS) 350' solo homerun over the right field wall in the top of the third. In the fourth, BCC's Kyle Montgomery (Fr, Kennedy HS) hit a lead off single to start. TJ Brown (So, Issaquah) hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Montgomery to second. Connor Rankin (Fr, Shorecrest) was walked and that was the end for starting pitcher Brent Botkin (Fr, Auburn). Unfortunately for Skagit Valley, new pitcher Colby Hawk (So, Timberline) was unable to defuse the Bellevue threat. Bellevue's Brian Gana (So, Richland) hit a double to score Montgomery from second. Bellevue's third run came in the eighth as Gana got his second RBI when hit a single off Hawk to score TJ Brown. Brad Reid entered in relief for Bellevue in the eighth inning and did not allow any hits and earned the save for his team. The Bellevue win gives Head Coach Mark Yoshino's first championship in his second try. Bellevue took second to Edmonds in 2002. This is Bellevue's third championship in 31 tournament appearances and first since 1979. Skagit Valley finishes second, their best-ever placing at the NWAACC Championship in only their third tournament appearance.
