After graduation from Ferris High School, Jo attended Eastern Washington University. She earned All-American honors in gymnastics in 1970 when she led Eastern to the women’s collegiate Class II national title. She was fifth in the floor exercise and sixth in the balance beam at that meet to begin an honor-filled career.

Jo competed in three more national tournaments, helping Eastern to finishes of fifth in 1971 and seventh in 1972. After winning the all-around competition at Eastern and UW her sophomore year, Jo placed 13th at the national competition.

In 1974, she started the gymnastics program at Central Valley High School and was assistant coach at Spokane Community College from 1977-1985. The CCS teams won three national junior college titles, including several individual champions, and she was selected NJCAA Co-Coach of the Year three times.

Jo served as CCS Women’s Athletic Commissioner from 1980 through 1994, the same year she was inducted into the NWAACC Hall of Fame. She is also a member of the EWU and CCS Halls of Fame.
