Community Colleges of Spokane
Class of 1992

Michael Keller came to SFCC in 1968 as the first men’s track and field coach in the history of the college. He also assumed the duties of head coach for the men’s cross country team. His previous coaching position had been as an assistant track coach at Oregon State University.

Keller quickly took SFCC to the top of the WAACC standings, winning four league championships (two in Men’s Cross Country and two in Men’s Track and Field) in his four years at SFCC. In 1972, he became the Head Men’s Cross Country and Track and Field Coach at the University of Idaho and stayed there until his retirement in 2002.

Keller won eight Big Sky championships, coached numerous All Americans and several Olympic performers. He coached Dan O’Brien, 1996 Olympic Decathlon Champion, both at Idaho and through 1999 in his world record breaking post collegiate career.

Coach Keller’s four NWAACC championship teams at SFCC have all been inducted into the CCS Hall of Fame, and in 1992, he was named to the NWAACC Hall of Fame.
