After his freshman year at the University of Washington, Bernie Fryer transferred to Peninsula College for the 1969-70 school year. He led the Pirates to the 1970 conference title in, at the time, their only appearance in the tournament. Fryer was named the Phil Pesco Tournament MVP and still holds several tournament scoring records including the single game record of 57 points.

He then went on to play two seasons for Brigham Young University where he played in two NCAA Regional's and the College All-Star game. He played professionally for the ABA's St. Louis Spirits (1972-73) and the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers and New Orleans Jazz (1974-77).

Fryer was a NBA official from 1978 to 2007 and Vice President and Director of Officials for the National Basketball Association since July 2008 until 2012. He continues to work for the NBA as an advisor and video specialist for its officials.
