Dr. Maury Ray attended Toledo High School where he played three varsity sports and was named the most valuable athlete in his senior class. He led the football team to an undefeated season and state championship in 1957. Ray played four years of college football before graduation from Pacific University with his B.A. in 1961.
He began his teaching and coaching career at Powers High School in Oregon where he led the boys’ basketball team to an undefeated season and the State B Championship in 1967. Ray coached basketball at Ashland High School and Idaho State University before coaching and earning his PhD from the University of Utah in 1970.
Dr. Ray coached basketball at UMD in Duluth, Minnesota for two years before returning to the Northwest and Spokane Community College in 1973. Ray became the Community Colleges of Spokane’s Athletic Director and Dean of the Physical Education Department in 1978 and served for 28 years in that position before retiring in 2006. Under his helm, Spokane’s 15 athletic teams won 94 NWAACC Conference Championships, had 80 second-place NWAACC finishes, and won over 200 Regional Championships.
In addition, his coaches and teams won numerous regional and national awards, adding to Spokane’s honor as the largest and most successful athletic program in NWAACC sports history.
Maury Ray has had a profound influence on both CCS athletics and the NWAACC and was inducted into both Halls of Fame in 2006. In 2013, the NWAACC named their new annual award for the overall most successful college athletic program the “Maury Ray Cup” in his honor.
