A standout player at Central Washington, Hake became one of the most successful of all Choker football coaches.

Under his leadership, the Chokers won or shared five Western Division titles and, aided by some memorable goal-line stands, beat Spokane for the 1969 Northwest Community College championship. Coaching at GHC from 1967 until the program was discontinued in 1976, he posted a career record of 65-30-1.

Hake also coached football at Mt. Vernon HS, Idaho State College, Moses Lake HS and completed his career at Hoquiam HS where he retired in 1991.

Hake was inducted into the Central Washington Hall of Fame in 1986 and the State High School Coaches Hall of Fame the following year. He died of Lou Gehrig's disease in 1994.
