John Volek

Walla Walla Community College
Class of 2009

Coach John Volek worked as an employee of Walla Walla Community College from 1977-1988. During this time he served as a health, Physical education and Recreation Instructor, Athletic Director, Assistant Football Coach, and Head Football Coach. From 1977-1983 Coach Volek was an assistant Coach and Defensive Coordinator on Head Coach Gary Knecht's coaching staff, and played a major role in helping the Warriors to two NWAACC Championships during that time. From 1984-1987 he was the head Football Coach and led the Warrior Football Program to a 31-7 overall record, including three consecutive NWAACC Championships in 1985, 1986, and 1987. In his eleven year involvement with Walla Walla Community College Football he was a major factor in the success of a program that compiled a record of 78 wins, 2 ties, and only 23 losses. More importantly, however, Coach Volek was best known for his skills as a teacher both on the field and in the classroom, and for his charismatic personality and ability to motivate young people. After leaving Walla Walla he went on to become the Head Football Coach at Fresno City College, moving from there to head coaching position at Sacramento State University in the Big Sky Conference, and finally to the Athletic Director position at Sierra College in Rocklin, CA where he is currently employed.
